WHAT IS SPIRITUALISM?
Is it a Religion, Science, Or Philosophy, and does it deal with the living or the dead?
Is Spiritualism indigenous to modern minds, or does it have its roots buried deep in ancient mystery?
Does Spiritualism deal only with ‘things that go bump in the night’ or is there a more meaningful side to it?
How does Spiritualism relate to other religious beliefs and is it in opposition to those beliefs?
Are there any references to Spiritualistic concepts and phenomena in the Bible?
These are all questions which if you are seriously interested in Spiritualism you may wish to address.
You will find that the study of Spiritualism and the matters of spirit are in truth, a lifelong pursuit. Spiritual knowledge is captivating; it is something which all of us are striving to attain. But this knowledge alone will not be enough. Once you have mastered the objective facts of Spiritualism, You will then begin the intriguing process of transformation. That transformation is a process whereby your knowledge becomes absorbed, and converted into wisdom.
Here are three definitions of Spiritualism:
Webster defines Spiritualism as: The belief that the dead survive as spirits which can communicate with the living, with the help of a third party, called a Medium.
Many Spiritualist Churches define Spiritualism as: The science, philosophy and religion of continuous life, based upon the demonstrated fact of communication, by means of Mediumship, with those who live in the Spirit World.
The definition adopted in 1948, during the centenary of the movement known as modern Spiritualism, very succinctly defines Spiritualism As: The proof of survival.
Here are three Fundamental Concepts of Spiritualism.
That there is personal and conscious survival of bodily death.
That death is the transition from one realm of awareness to another.
That communication of some form between this world and the Spirit world is possible, provided that certain conditions prevail.
Modern Spiritualism
The birth of Modern Spiritualism is most widely accepted as having taken place on March 31, 1848, with the events surrounding the Fox family, in Hydesville. Though in reality, Spiritualism itself is as old as humanity. Spiritualism has its roots in ancient religion. It is the basic essence from which all religious thoughts appeared and continues to appear on Earth. As such, Spiritualism belongs to all of us, not to any specific religious denomination. It is a gift from the Creator, given to all people, of all faiths. So what is a spiritualist church or centre? All churches and centres are spiritualist in nature and are supposed to be places from which the message and inspiration of a Higher Spirit can come forth.
Spiritualism as a concept of communication between those on earth and those in Spirit has been a part of our humanity for centuries. We can see this in the bible from the Old Testament: "Abraham sees three spiritual beings, who bring him a message from God."Ref: Genesis 18:2
"An angel of the Lord speaks to Abraham to stop him from sacrificing his son." Ref: Genesis 22
And in the New Testament. We are warned to discriminate carefully between true and false prophets. Ref: 1 John 4:1.
Throughout history there has been talk about spirit intervention and communication. From approximately 1800 B.C. to around 200 A.D.
In order for you to distinguish between true and false spiritual phenomena, it is necessary for you to develop the right kind of honest and open attitude, which eliminates any psychological predisposition to deception. Beliefs in the concept of Spiritualism were not confined to Biblical personalities alone. Many archaeologists believe the primitive Akkadians, inhabitants of central Mesopotamia, definitely saw the shadowy forms of their so called dead, even if it might only have been in their dreams. They based this belief on the stone tablets they have found from as early as 3800 B.C. which clearly show their belief in spirit and their worship of ancestral spirits.
